Smart Cities Innovation Center (AKİM) comes to life
For 42 years, we have been working to strengthen and popularize the smart city approach by using the power of informatics. SAMPAŞ Holding and Istanbul Technical University (ITU) launched the Smart Cities Innovation Center (AKIM) and started working together to design the urban life of the future and to develop cities in a healthy and sustainable way.
SAMPAŞ Holding, a leading company in the field of application of smart city technologies, is acting together with ITU in the vision of creating smart cities through digital twins by implementing the Smart Cities Innovation Center (AKİM). The first step of İTÜ, one of the most important technical universities in the world, and SAMPAŞ Holding within the scope of this work was to create the digital twin of İTÜ Ayazağa Campus. The study, which is Turkey's first digital twin-based smart campus project, enables SAMPAŞ Holding and ITU to conduct research focused on smart cities and digital twins, faculty members, undergraduate and graduate students to plan and implement joint scientific studies, and engineers who will design the people-centered cities of the future.
The expected benefits of the cooperation, which will be a starting point in the improvement of cities and the design of the cities of the future, include applied training in relevant sectoral fields, advancement of sectoral knowledge, joint scientific studies. and the preparation of national and international publications and scientific activities aimed at the applicability of scientific outputs to technology. Within the scope of this cooperation between SAMPAŞ Holding and İTÜ; SAMPAŞ Holding's "Smart City Management and Innovation Center" and "Digital Twin Software Platform" will also be made available to ITU for the use of students and researchers.
SAMPAŞ Holding Within the scope of this partnership between İTÜ and İTÜ, domestic and international commercial collaborations regarding smart cities will be developed, while a domestic digital twin software will be created by İTÜ and SAMPAŞ within 6 years.
The Geomatics Engineering department faculty member, who is the project manager on behalf of ITU, is also the "ITU National Geographic Information Technologies and Innovation Application-Research Center Director Prof. Dr. Tahsin YOMRALIOĞLU said, “Within the scope of this special cooperation with SAMPAŞ, we will try to design and develop the cities of the future based on science and technology. Management of cities, which are becoming more difficult to manage due to rapid population growth day by day, based on information technologies has become inevitable. However, all of these require a much more dynamic management, from infrastructure to superstructure, in a people-oriented manner, within the concept of sustainability. Nowadays, even the smallest information is very valuable for decision makers and individuals in cities, and the need for information technologies has increased even more. While all kinds of innovative solutions for smart cities are produced on an R&D basis within the scope of this project, primarily ITU Central Campus and our cities will be our application areas and laboratories to develop the most suitable smart space models. In addition, this project will set a very special example for university-industry cooperation,” he said.
SAMPAŞ Holding Chairman of the Board of Directors Şekip KARAKAYA said, “First of all, it is the world's most established technical We are very excited to embark on such a long-term journey with ITU, one of the universities in the world. We are aware of the importance of this journey for our country and our world. We have taken a big step towards designing the cities of the future with AKİM, which is the first stop of this journey. Globally, 3 million people move to cities every week. According to the United Nations' estimates, 68 percent of the world's population will live in cities in 2050. This means 2.5 billion more people will live in cities. Starting today, cities should be redesigned with people at the center. We need to prepare for today, today and the future. Thanks to the project that emerged as a result of our companionship with ITU, we aim to develop a world-class smart city solution that will make cities in Turkey more livable and sustainable. "With this cooperation, we will develop domestic and international commercial collaborations regarding smart cities within the scope of the protocol and localize the digital twin software as İTÜ and SAMPAŞ within 6 years," he said.
